New Audi SQ5: Best Crossover Currently On The Market?

Posted by

The original SQ5 was a remarkable thing. If you wanted a quick crossover, nothing came even close to touching it in terms of bang-for-your-buck value. The SQ5 Plus even gave the Porsche Macan a run for its money, despite costing some 50 percent less. It was a great bit of kit, but the fact that it was diesel deterred a lot of potential American customers. With the current diesel scandal the VW Group is experiencing, Audi decided, rather wisely, to sell the new SQ5 as a gasoline-only variant. Smart choice.

The 3.0-liter V6 TFSI sports a single turbocharger which helps it produce 345 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That's 10 more than the old car. The eight-speed automatic is fast and responsive, but incredibly smooth as well. At just over 4,100 lbs. the SQ5 isn't what you'd exactly call light, but it is remarkably good at hiding its weight. The sprint to 62 mph is dealt with in just 5.4 seconds and it'll go on to a limited top speed of 155 mph. There's power virtually everywhere throughout the rev band. Unlike the old diesel which delivered all of its power in one, massive surge, the new gasoline engine is predictable and linear.

The adaptive suspension comes standard, but you have to check the optional sports air suspension if you want to lift the ride height. Large 20-inch wheels come standard, but if you're brave and don't mind the slightly worse ride, you can even opt for massive 21-inch alloys. We won't discuss the interior because you know the goodies by now: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, a full array of safety systems, etc. As an extremely capable, incredibly quick small crossover, we doubt anything can compete with it.
