Canon 2x III - 1897

Designed to extend a lenses focal length by a factor of 2x, the Canon Extender EF 2X III delivers optical performance on par with the finest Canon super telephoto lenses. It delivers seamless communication among camera body, lens and extender, and features coatings to minimize ghosting, flare and chromatic aberration. The Fluorine coating resists soiling, smears and fingerprints. Extender EF 2X III meets all necessary standards in terms of rugged, dustproof and water-resistant construction, and should be in every professional's camera bag.

What our Experts Think
  • Teleconverter performance boost2× III doubles your lens’s focal length (e.g., 300 mm → 600 mm) while maintaining image quality.
  • Excellent optical design with minimal impact on sharpness and contrast when paired with compatible L‑series primes.
  • Fast & accurate AF support with USM/STM lenses that retain reliable autofocus performance.
  • Robust build quality with weather sealing for professional field use.
  • Ideal for wildlife, sports, and distant action — extends reach without carrying extra lenses.
  • Light loss trade‑off (approx. 2 stops) — plan exposure and stabilization accordingly.
  • Best paired with fast, high‑quality lenses (f/2.8–f/4 range) for optimal results.

Q&A

Q1: What is the Canon 2x III?
A: It’s a 2x teleconverter/extender that doubles the effective focal length of compatible Canon EF lenses (e.g., a 400 mm becomes 800 mm).

Q2: How does it affect aperture?
A: Attaching it reduces the lens’s maximum aperture by 2 f‑stops (slower light transmission), which impacts autofocus and exposure.

Q3: Does it communicate with the camera?
A: Yes — a built‑in microprocessor maintains seamless data communication (AF, metering, EXIF) between the camera and lens.

Q4: Is the build quality good?
A: It features rugged, weather‑sealed construction and Canon coatings (including fluorine) to resist dust, moisture, smears, and fingerprints.

Q5: How big and heavy is it?
A: Compact and lightweight for a teleconverter — roughly 72 mm diameter, 53 mm long, ~325 g.

Q6: What lenses is it compatible with?
A: Works with many Canon EF L‑series telephoto lenses (typically 135 mm+ and select 70‑200 mm & 100‑400 mm lenses). It isn’t compatible with all EF lenses, especially short zooms or non‑L optics.

Q7: Does it work with mirrorless Canon bodies?
A: Yes — when used with an EF‑to‑RF adapter, it can mount on RF‑mount mirrorless cameras too.

Q8: How does it affect autofocus?
A: Because of the effective aperture drop, AF performance may be limited (especially at narrower stops). Body/lens combinations influence how many AF points work.

Maintenance Tips
  • Keep optics clean: Use a blower and microfiber cloth; avoid touching glass directly.
  • Protect from dust & scratches: Always attach front/rear caps when not in use.
  • Store safely: Keep in a dry, padded case with silica gel to prevent moisture and fungus.
  • Handle gently: Align carefully when mounting to avoid damage to contacts or lens surfaces.
  • Avoid extreme conditions: Protect from rain, dust, heat, and humidity.
  • Inspect periodically: Check optical surfaces and mechanical connections for dust or wear.
  • Transport securely: Use a dedicated pouch or compartment to prevent impact damage.
