Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L IS 377256 - CM22419-005

This Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L IS USM Zoom Lens, #377256, is in great condition with minor handling wear. I rate it cosmetically a (9). The focus and zoom rings are smooth, the autofocus and aperture function properly, and the glass is clean and clear with no haze, marks, or fungus. There are a few faint specks of dust inside, but they do not affect image quality. This lens includes a Canon lens hood and front & rear caps. Please refer to the photos for details.

What our Experts Think
  • Professional-grade telephoto zoom
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a classic L-series telephoto zoom that delivers excellent sharpness and contrast throughout its zoom range, making it a versatile choice for portraits, sports, wildlife, and events.
  • Lightweight & well-balanced design
Compared with f/2.8 versions, this f/4 stays significantly lighter and more compact while still offering pro-level optics and handling.
  • Effective image stabilization
Built-in Image Stabilization (≈4 stops) helps reduce camera shake for sharper handheld shots across the 70–200 mm range.
  • Reliable autofocus & build quality
The ring-type USM autofocus is fast and accurate, and the L-series construction provides durability and weather resistance for demanding use.
  • Strong real-world performance
Community feedback generally praises its optical quality and usability, though some used copies may need servicing to maintain peak performance.
  • Great value in the used market
Many photographers find this lens a solid balance of performance, weight, and price, especially when adapted to modern mirrorless bodies.

Q&A

Q: What is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM?
A: It’s a professional-grade telephoto zoom lens in Canon’s L-series with a constant f/4 aperture, image stabilization, and EF mount—built for full-frame and APS-C Canon DSLRs.

Q: What are its key features?
A: It covers a versatile 70–200 mm range, has up to ~4 stops of optical image stabilization, a ring-type USM autofocus motor, fluorite and UD elements for sharp optics, and weather-sealed construction.

Q: How does the image stabilization help?
A: The IS system allows you to shoot handheld at slower shutter speeds with reduced blur, making it useful for low-light and telephoto shooting.

Q: Is this lens lightweight?
A: For a 70–200 mm L-series zoom, it’s relatively compact and lightweight (around 760 g), making it easier to carry and handle than faster f/2.8 variants.

Q: What photography is it best for?
A: Ideal for portraits, events, sports, wildlife, travel, and general telephoto work where reach and sharpness matter without the weight of faster lenses.

Q: Does it focus quickly?
A: Yes—its ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) provides fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus with full-time manual override.

Q: Are there any user experiences worth noting?
A: Many shooters praise its sharpness and reliability as an L-series workhorse, though some second-hand users have reported sample-specific issues (e.g., haze) that may require service.

Q: How does it compare to newer versions?
A: The Mark II and RF 70-200mm f/4 lenses have updated stabilization and coatings, but the original remains highly regarded for optical quality and value.

Maintenance Tips
  • Keep Front/Rear Glass Clean: Use a blower first, then a microfiber cloth; avoid rubbing dust across L-series coating.
  • Use Lens Hood Always: Essential for protection against flare, impact, and stray dust.
  • Protect IS System: Turn off Image Stabilization when mounted on a tripod to reduce internal wear.
  • Smooth Zoom Usage: Extend/zoom gently—avoid forcing the barrel, especially in cold conditions.
  • Moisture Prevention: Store in a dry cabinet with silica gel to prevent fungus in internal elements.
  • Contact Care: Clean electronic contacts lightly for reliable autofocus and IS performance.
  • Filter Protection: Use a high-quality UV/protective filter to safeguard the front element.
  • Mount Safety: Avoid strain on the lens mount when using heavy rigs or long shooting sessions.
  • Proper Storage: Keep capped, upright, and padded away from heat and humidity.
