Zeiss 50mm f2 Planar T* ZM - Silver - 1821913

The ZEISS Planar T* 50mm f/2 ZM is the quintessential standard lens for M-mount rangefinder photography. Built on ZEISS's legendary Planar optical formula, it delivers exceptional sharpness, uniform illumination, and precise color rendition across the frame. The T* multi-coated optics minimize flare and ghosting, ensuring pristine contrast in challenging lighting. Its bright f/2 aperture and close 2.3' minimum focus distance make it versatile for both environmental portraits and intimate details. A refined tool for photographers who demand optical excellence and mechanical precision.

What our Experts Think
  • Classic Zeiss optics in a compact form
A Leica M‑mount manual prime built on the legendary Planar design with ZEISS T* anti‑reflective coatings for crisp, high‑resolution images with excellent contrast and reduced flare.
  • Balanced normal‑length performance
The 50 mm focal length delivers a versatile field of view for street photography, portraits and everyday shooting, with even illumination across the frame and reliable sharpness at most apertures.
  • Tactile manual focus experience
Smooth, well‑damped focus ring and classic rangefinder usability make focusing intuitive, while a metal aperture ring offers satisfying control; compact size keeps the lens unobtrusive on M‑type cameras.
  • Distinctive rendering character
Zeiss‑branded T* coating and optical formula produce accurate colour, strong micro‑contrast and pleasing out‑of‑focus areas that suit both film and digital rangefinders alike.
  • Considerations
Being manual focus only, it’s best suited to photographers who enjoy hands‑on control; the unique 43 mm filter size may require special adapters or filters.

Maintenance Tips
  • Use lens cap and hood: Protect the front element from scratches and reduce flare.
  • Clean optics carefully: Start with a blower, then a microfiber cloth; avoid harsh chemicals to preserve Zeiss T* coatings.
  • Protect from dust & moisture: Not weather-sealed—store in a dry, padded case with silica gel.
  • Handle focus and aperture gently: Smooth manual focus and click aperture ring require careful operation to maintain precision.
  • Check lens mount: Keep contacts and screws clean for reliable mounting on ZM cameras.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Rapid heat or cold can affect internal optics and coatings.
  • Store upright in a padded case: Maintains element alignment and prolongs lens lifespan.
